Yahoo Chess sucks
Yahoo Chess seems to be the most popular place to play chess on the internet, and it's free. I tried it out last night for the first time, and quickly concluded that it sucks.
The first problem I noticed is that it doesn't randomly assign you black or white. The first person who creates a game gets to be white, and then the person who chooses to join the game is black. So the only way to play white is to create a game and wait around for someone to join you.
The next thing I didn't like is that the display of pieces that have been taken is so bad that you can't tell the difference between a pawn and a bishop.
I could have put up with these frustrations, but the final thing that annoyed me was that in the fourth game I played, my opponent resigned, and then booted me, and he got the credit for the win instead of me! Of course, the person on the other end could easily cheat at the game by using chess software or consulting books while playing, but there's no excuse for Yahoo allowing such an obvious bug in their software to continue to exist.
Maybe I shouldn't complain on account of Yahoo Chess being free. What did I expect for free? I tried another free chess website, the Free Internet Chess Server, and that website kept crashing on me when I tried to create an account. This made it even worse than Yahoo Chess, because at least Yahoo worked well enough for me to play three games.
I guess that, given Yahoo's reputation as the internet's premier portal site, I expected a more pleasant experience. Yahoo's failure in being able to create a high quality chess experience is probably due to the fact that the chess game isn't making them any money, so no one at Yahoo cares enough to fix the chess game's obvious problems. The programmers must be working in an environment where they don't take any pride in their work; they just want to do the minimum job so they can keep collecting their paychecks.

I mostly agree with you, Calico Cat! I played Chess on Yahoo! on several occasions; and in one instance when I was going to win for the first time (and I think I will make it the only time) my opponent quits, and he ends up winning? That situation is downright ridiculous! To hell with Yahoo! Chess. I am going to learn to play Backgammon, I'm from Europe, and there most people play Backgammon, and cards. I am going to learn to play Pocker, too. As for Chess it is still better to play that thinking persons game, a great game by the way, in the real world!

this post is garbage, you obviously suck at chess and have no skills whatsover, not to mention knowledge of the game being on of the sole reasons for your immature statement. I'm gratefull to be able to play chess with people around the world for free and I personally have no problems with yahoo chess whatsoever, except of course for the occasional assholes like yourself. :)
cheers

wow, you guys have obviously not played on yahoo chess for more than five games. the point system is great. And people cannot leave the table without shutting all their windows off. If you stay at the table, maybe make the table private, after the 10 minutes are up you will get the win by "forcing forfeit".
Did you even check to see if the tables were rated? If not, the game is not bound by points.
Or are you just upset because there were 9000 other people that could beat you?

I like yahoo chess. Some games have seat openings for both black and white as far as I know. And if the opponent resigns then you automatically get the win no matter what. You might want to recheck your records.

i play yahoo chess all the time and players have ways of cheating so that right when you are about to win you get booted off. there are other ways that they cheat to win too. it's as if they have software tricks that let them do this. when you get good and your rating gets higher you even start having more problems. i almost feel like someone at yahoo doesn't want you to win to much and discourage their paying customers. there are ways to pay to get extra services to make you a better chess player. sure!!!

Its crap but its free crap. And like all crap it attacks flies, who fight and scrape anyway they can to win.
By putting the time limited so low that their faster ping gives them a extre half a second(which in a minute games is everything) Or the vermon,in a non timelimit game who wait for you to resign. Their the scum of the earth, aswell as chichken SH*t Ba*tards.
If you know what your doing tho, its easly accessibly, quick chess for the fiscal challenged amature. Especial the rating system, allows
you to gauge your oppentant before hand. The yellow bellied swine take advatange of this aswell.By preying on silly people as your self cat

People are paranoid, not very many people cheat on yahoo. Usually its just shit players who think they are better than they are. I have played over a 1000 games and have people who accuse me of cheating. Problem is my rating is barely above 1300 so how could I be cheating. What a bunch of paranoid winer/ poor sports. Yahoo chess is good!

Hi, I've just started playing the Yahoo site. Although some people like to score points in a mean despicable way, others give you some really interesting games. Follow my advice, keep trying, one good game is worth 10 rubbish ones.

Just to help everyone, most people are using more than one sign in. They run their high rating person if they are winning and switch quickly(!) to their losing person if they feel things are not going well. In retaliation switch quickly to "Private" or failing that let their losing personality win by quit and forfeit. Although you lose a few rating points you have the satisfaction of knowing their losing personality's rating is going to be higher. This means they will have a harder time finding lower rating people to play. These guys seem to employ a computer game when they need the final stages to win. You can tell by the different character of the moves they suddenly start to play. However please give consideration to those who are much weaker than yourself, they deserve a break too!

Yahoo Chess is for the kiddies and the non-serious chess players. It always has been, and probably always will be.
My award-winning article "Yahoo Chess vs. the Chess Servers" (You can find it at my website... www.edcollins.com) is now almost eight years old and has been seen by more than a million people. Nearly everything I wrote back then about how inferior Yahoo's chess site is, compared to the chess servers, is still true today.
Yes, compared to ICC and FICS, Yahoo chess is absolutely horrible.

"The first problem I noticed is that it doesn't randomly assign you black or white."
That's not a problem, although I don't like how it won't automatically make you alternate colors.
"The first person who creates a game gets to be white, and then the person who chooses to join the game is black. So the only way to play white is to create a game and wait around for someone to join you."
That's simply untrue. You need to be a little more observant.
"The next thing I didn't like is that the display of pieces that have been taken is so bad that you can't tell the difference between a pawn and a bishop."
I'd guess that you don't have much experience playing online chess, it's quite easy in my opinion. It is inconvenient that you can't change the look of your pieces though.
"I could have put up with these frustrations, but the final thing that annoyed me was that in the fourth game I played, my opponent resigned, and then booted me, and he got the credit for the win instead of me!"
This is ludicrous, some reasons that you might believe this though:
Games and ratings not immediately recorded to your player info.
You didn't realize you ran out of time, game was over and you assumed opponent must have resigned.
Incorrectly checked your own records.
"The programmers must be working in an environment where they don't take any pride in their work; they just want to do the minimum job so they can keep collecting their paychecks"
Speaking out of frustration? How is this an objective article on yahoo chess, this should be taken out and the fact that your complaints are based on misconceptions and inexperience compound this fact.
"Yahoo's failure in being able to create a high quality chess experience is probably due to the fact that the chess game isn't making them any money"
This is also ludicrous. All their games are free. The only profit off of them is the advertising, so in fact, chess is about the 2nd largest earner for them.
I have logged a few thousand games on yahoo chess and have played only a handful of people that may have cheated - but no definite cheaters. Rude people are everywhere but that's true for any chess server. (e.g. letting their clock run out instead of resigning in an obviously lost position).
Your article is trash trash trash; and reading it was a complete displeasure.

luw12000-- i enjoy yahoo chess a lot. i have a 1600 rating but now to avoid the problems you speak of here, i only play for fun (unrated games}. if a person doesnt want to play unrated they can go to another table . this also allows for a friendly,no reason to cheat game.
