The Massachusetts Constitution

As you may have heard, the Massachusetts Supreme Court says that gay marriage is legal in Massachusetts.

A post at the Captain's Quarters says:

Bear in mind that the Massachussets Supreme Court interprets the state constitution, not the federal Constitution, and without knowing too much about the Mass. constitution, it's hard to remark whether they are spot-on or in left field here.

The Captain is spot on here, but I'm sure that the majority of pundits, both professional as well as bloggers, will see fit to give their opinion one way or the other without having any greater knowledge of Massachusetts constitutional law.

My own opinion on this issue, in general, is that marriage between one man and one woman has worked pretty well for thousands of years, so I don't see a need to change it.

I don't believe this an issue about libertarianism, because it's one thing to say that homosexuals should have a right to engage in sexual activities in private, but another to say that the activity must be given society's approval in a big public ceremony.
